Birmingham

Birmingham Jsoc is the largest in the country. A Jewish life is not hard to find, unfortunately a Masorti one is. Masorti student uptake has been low in recent years, however the jsoc is pluralist and accepting of everyone. we have tried to run masorti and reform services but struggle to get a minyan as we have never all seemed to be around on the same night.

Due to the size of the Jsoc, very little effort is needed to have a Jewish social life. The Jsoc has been able to offer a wide range of events and activities including, a weekly 5-a-side tournament, booze for jews, wasted wej bar crawl, Vodbul club nights, comedy nights, insight educational seminars, pub quiz, guest speakers from the Israeli ambassador to our very own field worker, as well as weekly Friday night onegs. It is very easy to get caught up in the Jsoc world. while we offer special rates for our events to jsoc members we know and accept that many are not and come to the events which appeal to them, which is why we have to offer a wide range of events, so our calender looks packed sometimes.

Hillel is the central hub of the Jsoc. It is a mansion with a large main room which is able to hold 150 for dinner while there is space in other rooms for those occasions when we get more on a Friday night. With its many rooms and big communal tv it is perfect for fallefel and films and the occasional house party. There is a great community atmosphere with strong links with Birmingham's Jewery which is sadly ageing and on the decline.

Rabbi Fishel and his wife Ester are very friendly and always welcoming people into their home for breakfast lunch and dinner. They offer many educational events and learning opportunities are widely available from the chaplin or from other students.

Like all societies in Birmingham we do not have a political perspective on anything, although many of our friends are in positions of authority within the university. we hope this will remain the case for the foreseeable future. We have a respectful relationship with the Isoc and we offer interfaith dialogue opportunities and training for this. There is a newly formed friends of Palestine society, we await to see how our relationship with them will develop.

if you have any questions or queries please don't hesitate to contact any member of the committee, our details are on the website.
